Register of Barista in Final Indonesia Barista Championship 2023 on Youtube
This study aimed to identify and analyze the use of formal register and
language functions in barista presentations at the Final of the 2023 Indonesia
Barista Championship. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with
data drawn from the transcripts of six barista finalists. The analysis focused on
the classification of register based on Martin Joos’s theory and language
functions based on Roman Jakobson’s framework. The findings showed that
formal register dominated the baristas’ communication, characterized by
technical vocabulary, standard sentence structures, and organized delivery.
Three primary language functions were identified: referential, conative, and
emotive. The referential function was used to convey technical information and
establish credibility, the conative function to direct the judges, and the emotive
function to express the baristas’ personal attitudes toward coffee. These
results indicated that the baristas’ communication in the competition served
not only to inform or instruct but also to reflect their personality and creativity.
