THE USE OF SATIRE AND IRONY BY ENGLISH POLTICAL NEWS IN INDONESIA DURING PRESIDENT RLRCTION CAMPAIGN (The Case: Tempo.co)
This study aims to analyze the use of satirical and ironic language
styles in the political reporting of English news media in Indonesia, especially
on the Tempo.co website during the 2024 presidential election campaign.
Satire and irony are used as effective rhetorical strategies to convey political
criticism in a subtle yet sharp manner. This research uses a descriptive
qualitative approach with Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis
method as the main theoretical framework. Data were obtained from
Tempo.co articles published in English and containing elements of satire and
irony. The result show that Tempo.co uses various types of satire, such as
Juvenalian, Horation, and Menippean satire, as well as three forms of irony,
namely Verbal, Situational, and Dramatic irony. The main function of the use
of the use of satire and irony is to convey socio-political criticism, shape
public opinion, and raise readers awareness of democratic issues and the
ethics of power during the election process. This research shows that
figurative language style becomes an important tool in media discourse to
construct political reality and ideology. Furthermore, the use of satire and
irony was equally diverse and effective.
