Hegemony Masculinity in Negotiation Constructed in House of The Dragon Movie Series 2022
This study analyzes the construction and negotiation of hegemonic masculinity in
the first season of House of the Dragon, using the conceptual framework of R.W. Connell
and James W. Messerschmidt. The purpose of this study is to identify how four concepts
of hegemonic masculinity are constructed in the series and determine which concept is
most prominent. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing
transcripts and visuals from the first season of the House of the Dragon series. The
findings show that hegemonic masculinity dominates access to and control of power
through social constructions that prioritize male identity as the primary heir and ruler.
Overall, this study finds that gender hierarchy is the most prominent concept of
hegemonic masculinity in the series, reinforced by narratives and practices that associate
success and legitimacy with male attributes, while women and other forms of masculinity
are seen as resistance. This dominance is not only imposed but also maintained through
cultural consensus and social mechanisms that shape collective awareness of existing
gender norms and structures.
