Children Response Toward Sexual Education in The Picture Book KidzLive: I Can Protect Myself by Singapore DChildren’s Society (2019)
This study aims to analyze children's responses to basic sexual
education conveyed through the illustrated storybook KidzLive: I Can
Protect Myself by the Singapore Children’s Society (2019). The book was
used as an educational medium to deliver self-protection messages to
fifth-grade students at UPT SD 8 Binamu, Jeneponto Regency, South
Sulawesi. This research employed a qualitative approach with a
descriptive method. Data were collected through structured interviews
with 15 students, categorized into high, medium, and low levels of
understanding regarding body hygiene, physical boundaries, and
rejecting inappropriate touch. The data were analyzed using Wolfgang
Iser’s Reader-Response Theory, which emphasizes the reader’s role in
constructing the meaning of a text. The findings indicate that most
students demonstrated a high level of understanding related to hygiene
and self-protection. However, comprehension of reproductive issues and
emotional communication remained low. These results demonstrate how
crucial it is to provide early childhood sexual education that is suitable for
each age group context-based, and discussion in order to promote
awareness and the development of self-defense abilities.
