Analysis A Comparative Study Impoliteness Strategies Used In The “Birds Of Prey” and “Cruella” Movies

This research analyzes how two female anti-hero characters, Harley
Quinn from the movie "Birds of Prey" and Estella/Cruella from "Cruella," use
impolite language. The main objective is to identify the types of impoliteness
strategies they use, understand the function or purpose behind their rude
remarks, and compare the differences and similarities between the two
characters. To analyze the data, this study uses a descriptive qualitative
method. The analysis is based on Culpeper's (1996) theory for identifying the
types of impoliteness and Culpeper's (2011) theory for understanding their
functions. For the comparison, the researcher applies Henry H. H. Remak's
(1961) comparative literature approach. The findings show that Harley Quinn
used 14 impolite expressions, with negative impoliteness (like threats and
intimidation) being the most common. The main function of her impoliteness
was coercive, meaning she used it to control or force others. Her style is
aggressive, direct, and often uses profanity. In contrast, Cruella used 12
impolite expressions, and her dominant strategy was sarcasm or mock
politeness. The primary function of her impoliteness was entertaining,
reflecting her witty and manipulative personality. Her style is more subtle and
clever.
