Learning Styles and Vocabulary Mastery: A Correlational Study on Students of MTs DDI Kanang, Polewali Mandar Regency.

Learning styles refers to a specific technique or way that students prefer for
learning. It is important for students to recognize it, in order to process and
comprehend information. This study was conducted to find out the learning styles
(Variable X), Vocabulary Mastery (Variable Y), and the correlation of both learning
styles and vocabulary mastery of the students in MTs DDI Kanang. The researcher
used non-proportional random sampling and there were 100 students of eleventh
grade elected in MTs DDI Kanang. The researcher applied the theory of learning styles
by John Grinder and Richard. The instruments were questionnaire and vocabulary
test. After obtaining the data, the researcher elaborated the result by utilizing a
descriptive quantitative method that was analyzed by Pearson Product Moment
Correlation method. The results showed that there were various types of students’
preference on learning styles. It showed that 65 of the students preferred for VAK, 17
students preferred for VA, 4 preferred VK, 1 preferred AK, 7 preferred V, 3 preferred
A, 1 preferred AK, 7 preferred V, and 3 preferred K. Majority of the students were
classified as “fair” by 57 mean score. Therefore, both variables between student’s
learning styles and vocabulary mastery of students on this research were found
having no correlation.
