A Comparative Study Of Presuppositions Between CNN Entertainment, Sport And Business Sections News Headline
Presupposition within the linguistic practices of mass media is profoundly
critical, as media authors attempt, either intentionally or unintentionally, to create
more attention from the reader or shape the reader's understanding of news events.
The aim of this study is to compare the types of presupposition triggers in the CNN
News headline’s entertainment, sports and business sections. This study was
conducted using a qualitative approach and analyzed based on Yule’s (1996) theory
of presuppositions. The sources of this study are CNN News headline from
entertainment, sports and business sections. Consequently, all 48 transcripts
(comprising 16 news headlines from each of the business, entertainment, and sports
sections that was published on July 2023) were subjected to thorough analysis,
revealing the presence of only three distinct types of presuppositions: existential,
lexical, and structural. The similarities in the types of presuppositions across the
three sections comprised the presence of lexical and existential presuppositions, with
existential presuppositions emerging as the most frequently observed category. It is
also noteworthy that factive, non-factive, and counterfactual presuppositions were
absent in all three sections. Conversely, the differences were characterized by the
presence of structural presuppositions in the entertainment and business sections,
while such presuppositions were not identified in the sports section.
