Speech Act Analysis in the Novel Home Fire
This study aims to analyze the types of speech acts used by characters in the
novel Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie using J. L. Austin's (1962) theory, namely
locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. This study used
qualitative method with content analysis technique on the dialogue between
characters in the novel. The findings show that the three types of speech acts
appear significantly and complement each other in shaping the characters,
conflicts, and meaning of the story. Locutionary acts serve to convey
information, illocutionary acts reinforce the characters' intentions and
ideologies, while perlocutionary acts produce emotional effects on the
listeners. The results show that language in the novel Home Fire not only
functions as a means of communication but also as a medium for expressing
identity, power, and human values in a social and political context.
