Students’ Difficulties in Comprehending Vocabulary of Short Stories: A Descriptive Study at SMAN 10 Gowa

This study examines the difficulties encountered by eleventh-grade
students at SMAN 10 Gowa in comprehending vocabulary in English short
stories. The research aims to investigate the types of difficulties students face
in understanding the vocabulary of short stories and the strategies they use to
overcome these difficulties. This research employs a descriptive qualitative
method. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured
interviews, and documentation of students activities. The findings indicate
that students experience several difficulties in understanding the vocabulary
of short stories, including limited vocabulary mastery, difficulty interpreting
word meanings within context, challenges with pronunciation and spelling,
and a lack of confidence and motivation to ask questions. Although students
employ various strategies such as using dictionaries, asking friends or
teachers, and noting down new vocabulary these strategies are often reactive
and less effective in deepening their vocabulary mastery. The study concludes
that vocabulary instruction needs to be more contextualized and integrated
with students’ real-life experiences. It also emphasizes the importance of II
applying active learning strategies, such as inferring meaning from context,
vocabulary mapping, and using authentic materials. Furthermore is essential
to help students overcome emotional barriers and improve their vocabulary
comprehension.
