Student’s Motivation in Learning Vocabulary Through Animation m e d i a at SMPN 1 BAEBUNTA
The objectives of this study are (1) to describe students' motivation in learning
vocabulary through animated media, and (2) to reveal the factors that influence
this motivation based on Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985). This
study uses a mixed-method approach that combines quantitative and qualitative
approaches. The research participants consisted of 60 ninth-grade students from
SMPN 1 Baebunta, Baebunta District, North Luwu Regency, who were selected
using purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires,
observations, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive
statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic techniques to
obtain a more in-depth picture. The results showed a significant increase in
motivation after the use of animated media. The average motivation score of
students increased from 2.35 in the pre-test (low category) to 4.56 in the post-test
(high category). Animated media proved to make learning more fun, interactive,
and interesting, as well as helping students understand and remember vocabulary
through a combination of visual, audio, and movement elements. In addition, this
study identified that the fulfillment of the aspects of autonomy, competence, and
relatedness are the main factors that drive an increase in student motivation.
Based on these findings, English teachers are advised to integrate animated media
into vocabulary learning to create a more effective and engaging learning process.
