The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on English Writing Skills: Perspectives of English and Literature Department Students at UIN Alauddin Makassar

This study aims to find out more about the impact of artificial intelligence on
English writing skills of students majoring in English and Literature
Department class of 2021 at UIN Alauddin Makassar. Using a qualitative
approach with structured interviews with 10 students who use artificial
intelligence, this research is based on the theory of constructivism (Piaget,
1970; Vygotsky, 1978) which emphasizes active learning through experience
and interaction. The results show that artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT,
Grammarly, and Quillbot provide positive impacts, including increased
efficiency, writing quality, and confidence. However, there are negative
impacts, such as decreased critical thinking and independent writing skills.
Advantages of using artificial intelligence include accelerating the writing
process and improving language quality, while disadvantages include
dependence on technology and reduced creativity. This study concludes that
the use of artificial intelligence should be balanced to maximize benefits
without compromising creativity and deep understanding in writing.
