Depressive Expression in Radiohead’s Selected Song Lyrics

Every song lyric has deep and varied meanings. Music is not just a melody;
it also conveys stories, feelings, and profound experiences. Based on this, the writer
focuses on the expression of depression in the lyrics of three selected songs by
Radiohead. This study aims to understand the meaning of depression expressed in
the lyrics of three chosen songs by Radiohead: "True Love Waits (2016)," "No
Surprises (1997)," and "Creep (1993)." The analysis is based on Geoffrey Leech's
semantic theory.This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and a semantic
approach to analyze the data. It employs literature study and note-taking as
techniques to present data that is truly valid. The results show that the lyrics of
"True Love Waits," "No Surprises," and "Creep" by Radiohead contain deep
meanings of depression. In the lyrics of "Creep," there are 10 lines that convey the
meaning of depression, one of which is "I wish I was special," indicating a desire
to feel special and different from feelings of worthlessness. In "True Love Waits,"
there are 6 lines that convey the meaning of depression, one of which is "I'll drown
my beliefs to have you be in peace," expressing deep suffering and sadness,
highlighting the sacrifices made to try to maintain a fragile relationship. In the third

song, "No Surprises," there are 8 lines that convey the meaning of depression, one
of which is "A job that slowly kills you." This depicts the depressive expression as
being inclined to highlight the experience of chronic stress and prolonged fatigue
due to unfulfilling work. The writer concluded the theme of depression is an
important aspect of Radiohead's works, highlighting the complexity and depth of
emotions hidden in their lyrics, and showing that their music serves as a mirror to
the human experience of struggle and emptiness.
