HYBRID GENRE IN THE MOVIE “ARMY OF THE DEAD”
This research analyzes Army of the Dead (2021), a film directed by Zack
Snyder, to identify how elements of horror and comedy are combined to create a
hybrid genre. The study applies Barry Keith Grant’s theory of genre hybridity
within a structuralist framework, which emphasizes that meaning in film arises
from the relationship among its intrinsic elements rather than from each part
individually. The research aims to explain how the hybrid genre is constructed
through theme, character, plot, setting, conflict, and point of view. This study uses
a qualitative descriptive method with data collected from the film’s scenes,
dialogues, and visual compositions. The researcher observes and interprets how
each intrinsic element reflects both horror and comedy conventions that work
together to form a single narrative structure. The findings reveal that Army of the
Dead embodies horror through death, fear, and chaos, while simultaneously
presenting comedy through irony, satire, and absurd humor. The theme
illustrates human greed and vulnerability, the characters blend tragedy and wit,
and the setting of Las Vegas becomes both terrifying and ironic. The alternation
of perspective and rhythm between tension and relief strengthens the film’s
hybrid identity. In conclusion, Army of the Dead demonstrates that horror and
comedy can coexist within one cinematic structure. This supports Barry Keith
Grant’s concept that genres are flexible systems that evolve through combination.
Snyder’s film uses hybridization not only to entertain but also to reflect the
contradictions of modern human experience the ability to laugh in the face of fear
and to find meaning amid destruction.
