Family Roles in CODA Movie (Structuralism Approach)
This research aimed to analyze the role of family towards the main character
in pursuing a career in the film CODA. This research uses Robert Stanton's
structuralism theory by analyzing character, plot, setting and message to find
out the role of family members towards the main character Ruby. This
research is a qualitative descriptive research that emphasizes the
phenomenon of family roles. The research shows that Ruby is a teenage girl
who is the only family member born normal who dreams of continuing her
education at Berklee of music school and wants to become a singer. But Ruby
comes from a deaf family and a fisherman background. Her parents depend
on Ruby to help communicate and connect with the environment. From the
results of the research, researchers found the existence of family roles such
as the role of the father, the role of the mother and Leo's role as a brother.
Frank acts as a father who has a villain character, which is a source of conflict
for Ruby in pursuing a career. Frank is responsible, humorous, and ultimately
provides support and affection. Jackie plays the role of a caring and loving
mother, has a strong villain character and is selfish and opposed to Ruby
pursuing a career. And finally Jackie has a strong relationship with Ruby, and
provides support. Leo plays the role of an older brother who becomes Ruby's
helper, resolves conflicts, supports Ruby, connects Ruby and her parents, and
is best friend for Ruby.
