Associative Meaning of the Utterance “In the Bleak Midwinter” in the TV Series Peaky Blinders Uttered by Characters: A Semantic Analysis
This research investigates the associative meanings of the utterance "In the
Bleak Midwinter" as used by characters in the British TV series Peaky Blinders. The
study is motivated by the recurring presence of this phrase throughout the series and its
origins as the opening line of Christina Rossetti’s poem, later adapted into a well-
known Christmas carol. Employing Geoffrey Leech’s theory of associative meaning,
the research aims to identify the types of associative meanings present in the utterance
and to analyse how these meanings contribute to the thematic and character
development within the series. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, the study
examines the contexts in which "In the Bleak Midwinter" is uttered, exploring
connotative, stylistic, affective, reflective, and collocative meanings. The findings
reveal that the phrase carries layered symbolic significance, reflecting the bleakness of
viii
the characters’ circumstances, their emotional states, and broader themes of hardship
and resilience. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how associative
meaning operates within audio-visual narratives and offers insights for students,
educators, and future researchers interested in semantics, literary adaptation, and the
interplay between language and media.
