Ecological Awareness in the “The Lorax” Animated Film (Ecocriticism Approach)
This research examines how ecological awareness is represented through the
characters in the animated film The Lorax (2012). This research applies an
ecocriticism approach based on Cheryll Glotfelty’s theory to analyze the
relationship between literature and the natural environment. Using a
qualitative method, this research focuses on narrative analysis through
characters’ dialogue, actions, and roles in the story, with a specific focus on
awareness of environmental destruction. The findings show that ecological
awareness is represented through contrasting character positions and is
influenced by each character’s background and interests. The Lorax
represents ecological awareness as moral resistance because he is part of the
forest and acts as its guardian, while the Once-ler represents a lack of
ecological awareness due to his interest in profit and his justification of
environmental exploitation. Meanwhile, Ted represents the development of
ecological awareness through experience, which leads him to take action to
restore the environment. These findings indicate that ecological awareness in
the film is not only shown through character responses, but also shaped by
different interests and positions in relation to nature, positioning the film as a
literary work that reflects human–nature relationships.
