Macrostructure and Microstructure Relation: A Discourse Analysis of Netizens’ Humor Comments on Sam Smith’s Video in TikTok
This study examines how the relationship between macro and micro
structures influences the meaning of humor expressed by netizens in Sam
Smith's TikTok video. Social media, especially TikTok, has become a humor
platform for self-expression, social criticism, and community interaction. The
purpose of this study is to explain how macro (main theme or topic) and
micro (semantics, syntax, language style, and rhetoric) structures interact
with each other to produce the meaning of humor. This research collected
data from the comments on TikTok using a descriptive-qualitative design and
Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The results show
that visual criticism, pop culture comparisons, song lyrics parodies, satire on
clothing styles, and hyperbolic reactions are how netizen humor is created.
The macro meaning of humor is effectively constructed by microstructural
components such as visual metaphors, irony, and informal syntax. These
interdependent relationships suggest that humor on TikTok serves not only
as entertainment but also as a tool for social critique, ideological expression,
and community interaction; this reflects the complex discourse practices of the
current internet era.
