The Exploration Of Possible World Of Pandora In The Film “Avatar: The Way Of Water” (2022)

This research analyzes the fictional world of Pandora in the film Avatar:
The Way of Water using Thomas Pavel's Possible Worlds Theory. The purpose
of this research is to explain how James Cameron constructed Pandora as an
autonomous fictional world that remains connected to the real world. This
research uses a qualitative descriptive method by observing the film and
reviewing supporting literature. The findings show that Pandora is formed
through fictionalization, in which real issues such as environmental damage,
colonialism, indigenous struggles, and animal exploitation are reshaped into a
cohesive fictional universe. By applying Pavel's framework of the real world
(G), the fictional world (K), and the relationship of accessibility (R), this study
shows that Pandora reflects urgent ecological and cultural realities while
maintaining its internal coherence. Therefore, the film is not merely a visual
spectacle, but also a critical narrative that reflects and critiques human
interactions with nature, culture, and power. This research contributes to
literary and film studies by demonstrating the relevance of Possible Worlds
Theory in cinematic analysis and raising awareness of ecological, cultural, and
ethical issues embedded within fictional worlds.
