Presupposition in the Movie ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021)
Presuppositions are assumptions or knowledge that the audience is assumed
to have known or accepted before or during viewing a particular scene in a
film. Therefore, this study aims to explore the types of presupposition in the
Film Spiderman” No Way Home. The researcher applied qualitative method
and the theory of Pragmatics by Yule to study how language is applied in cer-
tain contexts for communication in the film. The findings demonstrated that
presupposition is a crucial pragmatic strategy in the film dialogue. There are
six different types of presuppositions, according to Yule found in the film, in-
cluding existential, factual, non-factual, lexical, structural, and counterfactual
presuppositions. In No Way Home, the most dominant type of presupposition
is the existential presupposition. The movie supports the multiverse plotline,
reveals character growth and their relations to one another, and enhances
emotional impact. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, presuppositions embody the
film’s thematic essence responsibility, sacrifice, and second chances by allow-
ing meaning to unfold implicitly through what is assumed rather than what is
said.
