The Use of Metaphor in Diane di Prima’s Selected Poetry

Poetry frequently utilizes metaphor as both a linguistic and cognitive
device that enables abstract ideas to be understood through more concrete
and vivid imagery (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). The findings indicate a total of 22
metaphorical expressions, which are classified into two main forms: structural
metaphors (11 data) and ontological metaphors (11 data), while orientational
metaphors were not identified in the poetry. Structural metaphors and
ontological metaphors dominate, indicating the poet’s tendency to map
abstract concepts through concrete conceptual frameworks, such as woman is
harpy or I am a shadow. These results demonstrate that metaphors in Diane di
Prima’s poetry not only enrich the imagery and emotional resonance but also
reveal the interconnectedness of language, thought, and cultural expression.
