The Semiotic of Social Inequality in the Movie Leave the World Behind (2023)
This study analyzes the representation of social inequality in the movie Leave
the World Behind (2023) directed by Sam Esmail. The purpose of this
research is to identify how various signs in the movie portray class
differences and how these differences become more visible during a crisis.
This study employs a qualitative descriptive method and applies Roland
Barthes’ semiotic theory, focusing on two levels of meaning: denotation and
connotation. The data are taken from dialogues, scenes, and character
interactions that depict forms of social inequality, supported by related
literature. The findings show that Leave the World Behind represents social
inequality through visual and verbal signs such as setting, physical
appearance, facial expressions, body language, manner of speaking, and
family interactions. Denotative meanings show visible class distinctions,
while connotative meanings reveal deeper implications of race, power, and
privilege. The movie portrays how crisis situations intensify social inequality
as each class responds to fear and uncertainty differently. The results show
that Leave the World Behind represents social inequality not only through
material differences but also through daily communication and behavior, as
seen in how characters interact, speak, and respond to each other during the
crisis.
