Representation of Beauty in Selected Western Women Songs: A Semiotic Analysis

This research aims to analyze how the concept of beauty is represented in
selected songs by three Western Women Artists namely: Christina Aguilera,
Selena Gomez, and Alessia Cara. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a
semiotic analysis based on Ferdinand de Saussure's theory, this study identifies
the signs and meanings found in the song lyrics. In “Beautiful” by Christina
Aguilera, the signifier “sun” represents hope and healing, while “puzzle undone”
signifies the fragmented self-seeking wholeness. In “Who Says” by Selena Gomez,
the phrase “diamond in the rough” functions as a sign of authentic worth beyond
societal judgment. Meanwhile, in “Scarsto Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara, “scars”
symbolize emotional struggle transformed into strength, and “light within”
reflects self-enlightenment and inner beauty. The findings indicate that these
songs collectively reject narrow, appearance-based definitions of beauty and
instead emphasize self-acceptance, authenticity, and empowerment. Specifically,
this research demonstrates that popular music serves as a semiotic space for
redefining beauty as a process of emotional healing and identity affirmation,

offering listeners especially women a transformative understanding of self-
worth.
