Translation Strategy of Figurative Language in the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

This study aims to analyze the translation strategies of figurative
language in the novel The Midnight Library into Indonesian. The focus of this
research is on how are the translation strategies of figurative language in the
novel The Midnight Library applied to preserve the original meaning and
nuance in the Indonesian version. This research uses Descriptive Qualitative
approach with data source in the form of English version of The Midnight
Library by Matt Haig and Indonesian version of Perpustakaan Tengah Malam
by Dharmawati. The data is collected by identifying figurative language such
as metaphor (48 data), simile (33 data), personification (25 data), hyperbole
(8 data), and irony (1), which are then analyzed for their translation strategies.
The results show that out of 110 figurative language data, the most dominant
strategy is Descriptive Equivalent, followed Functional Equivalent,
Modulation, Cultural Equivalence and Transference. These strategies are
chosen to maintain a balance between fidelity to the original meaning and
readability in the Indonesian cultural context. This research is expected to
contribute to the study of literary translation, especially regarding the
translation strategies of figurative language in novels.
