Critical Discourse Analysis on Beauty Performed by Miss Universe 2024: A Multimodal Approach
This research investigates the construction of beauty in the Miss Universe
2024 pageant through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and
Multimodal Visual Grammar (MVG). Beauty is no longer defined solely by
physical appearance, but also shaped by verbal expression, visual representation,
and performative acts. Using Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework and
Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar, this study analyzes how beauty is
represented through both spoken language and visual elements, such as gesture,
clothing, and framing.
The data were collected from selected visual and verbal excerpts of the
Miss Universe 2024 pageant, particularly focusing on the Q&A segments, stage
performances, and cultural representations. The findings reveal that beauty is
constructed as a combination of physical elegance, communicative intelligence,
and sociocultural symbolism. While the pageant promotes empowerment and
diversity through its slogan “Confidently Beautiful,” it still reinforces normative
beauty standards through visual aesthetics and structured performance.
This study concludes that the concept of beauty in Miss Universe is
multimodally produced and ideologically driven. It highlights how global beauty
pageants act as sites for reproducing modern beauty ideals that are glamorous,
communicative, and performance-based.
