Exploring non – English major student experience in using Duolingo Application : Narrative Inquiry on Islamic University
This study aims to understand the learning experiences of non-English major
students in using the Duolingo application as a medium for learning English
through a Narrative Inquiry approach. This study was conducted at an Islamic
university in makassar involving non-English major students who actively use
Duolingo. Data were collected through in-depth narrative interviews and
reflective journals, then analyzed using Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory.
The results show that the students' learning experiences followed the stages
of experiential learning, starting with concrete experiences of using Duolingo
in a flexible and enjoyable way, followed by reflection on their feelings and
learning challenges. The students then built practical understanding of
vocabulary, pronunciation, and basic grammar. However, the application of
English in real contexts was still limited due to a lack of practice environments
and low self-confidence. Overall, Duolingo is interpreted as an effective the
supporting medium in building motivation and learning habits, but it cannot
yet function as a comprehensive English language learning solution.
