The Analysis of Student Difficulties Speaking in Claas Eighth Grade Students at SMP 33 Sinjai

The purpose of this study was to identify students' speaking difficulties in
English experienced by grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 33 Sinjai. This study
used a mixed-method approach, which is a combination of qualitative and
quantitative methods. The data collection techniques used included observation,
open-ended interviews, and questionnaire distribution. The results showed that
students' difficulties in speaking English were caused by several factors, both
linguistic and social. Based on data from observations, interviews, and
questionnaires, it was found that students' difficulties include lack of vocabulary,
poor pronunciation, lack of confidence, and low motivation. Linguistic factors,
such as limited vocabulary and difficulty in pronunciation, hinder students'
ability to communicate effectively. Meanwhile, social factors, including lack of
motivation from teachers and neighbours, as well as fear of peer judgement,
contribute to students' low self- confidence. Students tend to feel scared, nervous
and embarrassed when speaking in class for fear of making mistakes and being
negatively judged by their peers.
