Students’ Perception of Using AI in Translating English Texts at The English Language and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar
This study examines students' perceptions of AI translation tools in the
Department of English Language and Literature through the Technology
Acceptance Model (TAM) framework, analyzing behavior observation, attitude
inferences, and attitude evaluation & self-efficacy dimensions. The rapid
advancement of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google Translate has provided
significant support in translation tasks, enhancing efficiency across three
perception dimensions. This study uses a mixed-method approach, combining
quantitative and qualitative data from 30 sixth-semester students. The results
show students acknowledge perceived usefulness for speed in behavior
observation, but express cautious attitude inferences regarding accuracy
limitations, particularly in cultural/contextual expressions. Students
demonstrate self-efficacy in attitude evaluation, viewing AI as a
complementary tool requiring human oversight rather than a substitute for
manual translation skills. This study provides insights into optimizing TAM-
guided AI integration in translation pedagogy through balanced, critical
adoption.
