YouTube channel ShortCircuit and to describe how these speech acts function
as persuasive strategies in the reviews. The data of this study were taken from

utterances were categorized and analyzed based on Searle’s classification of
speech acts, which consists of assertives, directives, commissives, expressives,
and declaratives, also supported by Mulholland’s persuasive tactics which are
advise, analogy, comparison, definition, express emotion, humor, impartiality,
praise, state, and testimony. This research used a descriptive qualitative
approach to examine the types of speech acts and their persuasive functions.
The results of the study reveal several findings. Firstly, four types of speech acts
were identified in the data: 48 assertives, 5 directives, 4 commissives, and 5
expressives. No declaratives were found. Assertives appear as the most
dominant type, showing that the speakers mainly rely on presenting
statements, explanations, and claims to persuade the audience about the
product being reviewed. Regarding persuasive tactics, assertives utilizing the
most versatile approach by employing 8 out of 10 Mulholland’s persuasive
tactics, with ‘State’ being the most frequent. On the other hand, directives used
2 persuasive tactics and primarily focus on advice. Commissives used 3
persuasive tactics including state, testimony, and humor. Expressives display
notable variety, used 4 distinct tactics led by ‘Express Emotion’ to convey
personal feelings and connect with the audience. These results highlight that
speech acts serve not only as tools for communication but also as devices that
strengthen persuasion in digital product reviews.
