Gestures Analysis in A Quiet Place Part II (2021) Movie
This research aims to analyze the types and functions of gestures used in the
film A Quiet Place Part II (2021) as a primary form of nonverbal
communication in a situation where verbal interaction is extremely limited.
The film provides a unique context for linguistic and pragmatic analysis
because almost all character interactions rely on body language due to the
constant threat of sound-sensitive creatures. This study employs a descriptive
qualitative method, using the gesture theories of McNeill (1982) and Ekman
and Friesen (1969) as the analytical framework. The findings reveal four main
types of gestures deictic, iconic, metaphoric, and beat gestures each serving
different communicative purposes such as illustrating objects, directing
attention, expressing abstract concepts, and marking the rhythm of nonverbal
utterances. Moreover, the study identifies five gesture functions, namely
substitutive or emblems, illustrators, regulators, adapters and affect displays
function. These functions demonstrate how gestures operate not only as
complements to speech but also as independent communicative tools for
conveying emotions, regulating interaction, and replacing verbal expressions
entirely.
