Denotative and Connotative Meaning Found in Billie Eilish’s Selected Song

This research examines the denotative and connotative meanings found
in selected songs by Billie Eilish, viewing her lyrics not only as musical
compositions but also as literary texts that convey emotional dsssepth and
social messages through poetic language. The study applies the semantic
theory of meaning proposed by George Yule (1985), which distinguishes
between denotative and connotative meanings. A qualitative descriptive
method is employed to identify and interpret the layers of meaning contained
in the song lyrics. The findings reveal that denotative meanings implied in
Billie Eilish’s selected songs refer to the literal interpretations of the lyrics
based on dictionary definitions, while the connotative meanings reveal
deeper, symbolic messages, often related to emotional struggles, relationship
dynamics, and social criticism.
