The findings revealed that the teachers employed all three types of
code-switching: tag switching (3 occurrences), intra-sentential switching

(65 occurrences), and inter-sentential switching (15 occurrences). Intra-
sentential switching was the most dominant type because teachers

frequently inserted English words and phrases into Indonesian sentences to
explain the lesson and facilitate students’ understanding. Regarding the
functions, five functions of code-switching were identified: referential (2
occurrences), directive (57 occurrences), expressive (3 occurrences), phatic
(4 occurrences), and metalinguistic (20 occurrences), while the poetic
function was not found. The directive function was the most dominant
because teachers mainly used code-switching to give instructions, manage
classroom activities, and encourage students’ participation. Overall, the
findings indicate that code-switching is an effective instructional strategy
that supports classroom communication and enhances students’
comprehension of English learning materials.
