The Maintenance of Kedang Language as Mother Tongue Among the Students of Lembata Island at UIN Alauddin Makassar
This research examines how Lembata students at UIN Alauddin
Makassar preserve Kedang as their mother tongue. A descriptive qualitative
approach was used, involving ten Kedang-speaking students selected through
purposive sampling. Data were obtained through observations and semi-
structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The study was guided by Giles,
Bourhis, and Taylor’s Ethnolinguistic Vitality Theory, particularly its three
components: Status of Language, size and distribution, and institutional
support. The findings indicate that students preserve Kedang through inherent
positive attitudes, regular interaction with fellow speakers, and supportive
institutional environments.
