Slapstick Comedy as Social Criticism in the Film Baby’s Day Out (1994)
This study aims to identify the forms of slapstick comedy and examine how
they function as a medium of social criticism in Baby's Day Out (1994). This
study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with the film serving as the
primary data source. The data consisted of ten selected scenes containing
slapstick comedy. Data were collected through observation by watching the
film repeatedly, identifying scenes containing slapstick elements, and
classifying them into different forms before analyzing their social meanings.
The findings reveal two forms of slapstick comedy, namely physical action and
absurd situation, with physical action appearing more frequently. The analysis
shows that these comedic elements create humor while representing social
criticism of carelessness, lack of responsibility, poor decision-making, judging
others without knowing the facts, disrespect for personal space, and the
consequences of illegal actions. This study concludes that slapstick comedy
functions not only as entertainment but also as an effective medium for
conveying social criticism through humorous situations.
