The Representations of Immigrant Life to Achieve American Dream in Multicultural Society in Sandra Cisneros' Novel “The House on Mango Street”
Representing the lives of immigrants in achieving their dreams in a multicultural society in Sandra Cisneros' novel The House on Mango Street is the focus of this research. An objective research of this study is describing the immigrant life in the novel. Descriptive gualitative method is used in this study. The data is analyzed by using representation theory and explanation of multicultural by Stuart Hall. The result shows that the immigrants should fight to achieve their dreams when they have to experience marginalization and patriarchy in the same time, without preparing themselves first. But behind all these problems, some characters are able to change their way of life and get out of this marginal place. American dream, marginalization and patriarchy become crucial points in immigrant life which represents how hard to live with people from difference culture while fighting to get a better life. Sandra's representation of immigrant's life struggle to American dream is part of her life as an immigrant.
