The Struggle of Black People Against Racial Stereotype in film “The Hate U Give ”
This research discusses the issue of racism in the film The Hate U Give (2018). The purpose of this research was to find out the kinds of racism and how black people struggle, especially Star as the main character and the only witness to the shooting by a white police officer against his best friend to get justice. The research used descriptive gualitative method by using Czerniaweski's theory and Georgia's theory was used to answer both of the problem statement. The data are taken from the film “The Hate U Give” by note-taking as a research instrument. The results of this research applied that the problem of race and stereotypes against black people still occurs both individually, institutionally, and through internalized racism. The struggle was undertaken by Star in facing racism in the film “The Hate U Give”. Star chooses to use her voice to fight against racial stereotypes. Star started with protests in media social, TV, and grand juries interview as well as joining a protest to raise awareness towards racial stereotypes experienced by AfricanAmericans. The conclusion is that racism is still happening both individually, institutionally, and internalized racism. This is an inhumane act and must be stopped and reguires a struggle to get justice for oppressed people.
