Deconstruction to Mormon Beliefes Through a Feminist Novel “Educated: A Memoir” By Tara Westover
Mormonism is unfamiliar religion in Indonesia. Like many other religions, Mormonism is followed by both men and women. They famously live in America. The females in Mormon must be faithful to their husbands and the religion accepts polygamous life. Therefore, it makes women unable to freely speak up about their disagreement with that kind of lifestyle or the injustice they feel. This research examines the aspect does by the author of “Educated: A Memoir” deconstructs in Mormon Belief and also to find out how the author of the novel deconstruct the Mormon belief. This study focusing to the deconstruction as a technigue for criticize and fights against the patriarchal idea by the author's father as an obedient Mormon in feminist perspective. Then, Helene Cixous's post-structuralist feminist theory is the theory used by the researcher, which is the way to Criticize the mistreatment or injustice against women in social-cultural life by bring up the patriarchal aspects and binary opposition in the feminine writing. Afterward, this research uses gualitative research as the method. The patriarchal aspects does by the author's father in several sectors such education, cloth/dress, and work, then said that was a God command as an obedient Mormon. Furthermore, the deconstruction can be clearly seen in the way of Tara Westover describes all of her father belief as an obedient Mormon contradicts with the regulation of Mormon, American lifestyle, and also her belief and the reality in the world outside after she received her formal education in the college. The critigue of the author to her father belief in several aspects bring up the patriarchal and binary opposition as a way of Tara Westover deconstructs Mormon beliefs through her writing as a women.
