The Portrait of Mothers in The Novella “The Highland Widow” by Walter Scott and The Novel “Holy Mother” by Akiyoshi Rikako
This research is a comparative study that discusses motherhood in the novella The Highland Widow by Walter Scott and in the novel Holy Mother by Akiyoshi Rikako. The Highland Widow and Holy Mother are literary works that tell about a mother that is trying to save their child from danger according to them and end up performing deviant things. The aims of this study are to find the similarities and differences of mother characters from each object and to analyze how the mothers are portrayed in each object. This thesis uses a descriptive gualitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher uses note taking as the instrument to find the similarities and differences of mother characters and uses maternal feminism theory by Ellen Key to classify the data into 4 natures of motherliness: to sacrifice, to cherish, to be tender, and to give. Furthermore, the researcher elaborates the portrait of mothers by using the concept of motherhood from Ellen Key.
