The Subaltern in the Novel Dear Martin (2017) by Nic Stone

Muniratul Hidayah - Personal Name;

This research raises the topic of black people as subalterns in the novel Dear Martin by Nic Stone. The research aims to explain how black people are pictured as subaiterns and to find out the efforts made by the black people to get eguality with white people. This study uses the concept of subaltern according to Gramsci's perspective and uses descriptive gualitative methods. The results of this research found that there are four black people characters who can be pictured as subalterns. The subaltern in the novel Dear Martin by Nic Stone is pictured by the existence of hegemony or domination from the ruling group over the subaltern. The domination felt by black people is carried out politically, ideologically, culturally, and economically because of their black race. It created awareness of subaltern groups, and this treatment made them want to strive to get eguality with white people. The efforts made by the black people to get eguality with white people, such as: through education, building relationships with those who can help them, demonstration, and fighting directly. The researcher concludes that the subaltern in the novel Dear Martin by Nic Stone is pictured by the existence of hegemony from the ruling group over the subaltern. As a result of subaltern consciousness, they use their efforts to counter white people's hegemony. Gramsci's subaltern concept also can be a counterhegemony through the author as a means of playing victim because the authors can picture black people as victims to influence readers.
