ROLAND BARTHES’ NARRATIVE CODES POTRAYED IN JOHN GREEN’S TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN

The Roland Barthes narrative codes are excellent in deciphering any
narrative story which challenge the readers to go beyond its significance of
meaning. This study analyzes one of John Green’s novels entitled Turtles All the
Way Down which was first published in 2017. This study aims to scrutinize the
narrative codes dwelt within the said novel by using Roland Barthes’s five
narrative codes theory. In collecting the sources, the researcher uses descriptive
qualitative method. The analysis is done by carefully read the story to choose
data that contain important meaning. Furthermore, they were analyzed using
Roland Barthes theory to show how the narrative codes represented in the novel.
The result of this study shows from the five narrative codes in Roland Barthes’
theory, there are three codes that are found and represented in the novel. Those
are; proairetic code, semantic code, and cultural code. The researcher concluded
that the writer of Turtles All the Way Down uses Roland Barthes’ Narrative
Codes theory in his novel to decode the hidden messages and meanings which
are inherent in the novel.
