MOTHER-CHILD RELATIONSHIP IN FOLKTALES THE LEGEND OF MALIN KUNDANG AND THE GOLDEN BREAD (MONOMYTH THEORY)
This study focuses on comparison of the relationship between mother and
child in folktales The Legend of Malin Kundang and The Golden Bread. The
objective of the study is to find out the relationship between mother and child that
can change the fate of children in folktales. This study is a library study and it
used qualitative method and uses Monomyth theory by Joseph Campbell to find
the relationship between mother and child in folktales The Legend of Malin
Kundang and The Golden Bread. The findings of this study indicate that Malin
Kundang's journey at the departure stage went well because Malin had a wish to
make his mother happy. Malin Kundang's mother gave more trust to her son when
Malin Kundang wanted to go abroad. However, Malin Kundang was cursed by his
mother to be a stone for forgetting the true purpose of his journey which caused
his fate to turn into disaster. Meanwhile, Narcissa passed the Departure stage of
The Golden Bread because of her wish. Narcissa's mother always warned her
daughter about good things even though at first her daughter Narcissa was
disobedient. However, Narcissa was able to efficiently complete the Return stage,
turning her fate into good luck as Narcissa apparently remembered all of her
mother's messages.
