THE MEANING OF ‘ONLINE LEARNING MEME’ DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC ERA IN INDONESIA (SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS)

Akmal Hidayat. SR - Personal Name;

This research is aimed at analyzing the representament, interpretant, and
object in ‘Online Learning Meme’ during Covid-19 pandemic era in Indonesia.
The descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the data. The data were
collected from popular social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
The theory that used in this research was Charles Sanders Peirce’s (1839-1914)
semiotic theory, the three-dimensional system (triadic/trichotomy). According to
the results, it is found that the majority of memes that use images or pictures as a
medium of transmission have balanced formats, which means that the amount of
textual and visual information carried or transmitted inside the memes is balanced
through textual and visual, and the majority of their contents are complex or
varied and relatable to our lifes. Five of the six observed data have multiple

contents and are relatable. Four of them contain current events and meme self-
reference. Additionally, only one instance of each of politics, news, and pop

culture is presented. Finally, description memes are the most popular sorts of
memes. These memes use various components of a picture to metaphorically
represent different things, which is frequently decided by added text.
