POLITICAL HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND IN THE NOVEL “MILKMAN” BY ANNA BURNS BASED ON NEW HISTORICISM THEORY
Literature is not born autonomously but literature is always surrounded by the
history of its time. The focus of this research is Milkman, a historical novel written by
Anna Burns. This research aims to analyze the political history in the novel Milkman
by Anna Burns. Descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. This research using
the New Historicism approach developed by Brannigan. The researcher found several
literary facts that paralleled to the historical facts of Northern Ireland. The results of
this study indicates that the novel is based on Northern Ireland in 1970 historical event.
Several factual events related in the novel to sectarian conflicts became the root of the
problem presented in the novel. Sectarianism causes instability in that area and led to
separation into several group. This condition led to different views and eventually to
prolonged difficult conflict among Northern Ireland. Some sectarian forms in the novel
are giving restricted names, regional restricted names, regional restrictions for traveling
and many government spies roaming around. The representation of sectarian conflict
found in the novel Milkman by Anna Burns include: bombings, legal inequality and
curve restriction.
