The Representation of Orient in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi Film
This thesis dicusses about Orientalism field of study, specifically the
representation depicted in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi Film. It aims
to investigate how Western media framed Islam in the selected film. This thesis
used descriptive quallitative method. The researcher used the proponent concept
theory of Edwad Said, Orientalism.
The researcher as the main instrument took note-taking in collecting and
evaluating data based on the theory used. The findings showed that there are at least
10 images of the Orient that put Benghazi people represented as violent, foolish,
scornful, materialist, temperamental, dependent, terrorist, hateful, anarchist and
remained hypocrites. The film confronted bad images of the Orient, nevertheless it
is a Western fabrication which the costructed film remained fully American
perspectives. These representations have influenced the researcher that 13 Hours:
The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is surely as a controversial film worse as a proganda
with numerous negative images, false assumptions and stereotypes pointed against
Middle East Countries, Benghazi pople, Libya.
