MENTAL BULLYING IN DANIELLE STEEL’S NOVEL “BIG GIRL”
This thesis is the research about Mental Bullying in Danielle‟s Steel Novel
“Big Girl” by using Theory of Bullying by Allan Beane. The objectives of this
research are (1) to describe the kinds of mental bullying are experienced by
Victoria in the novel Big Girl and (2) to describe the impacts of mental bullying
are experienced by Victoria in the novel Big Girl.
The method used in this research is qualitative method. The data
collections of this research are in Danielle Steel‟s novel “Big Girl” which was
published in 2010 and some books are used to analyze and support this research.
In collecting the data, the writer uses note taking as instrument.
There are four kinds of mental bullying that depicted to Victoria Dawson;
Isolation, Humiliation, Embarrassed and Condescended that described in theory of
Allan Beane . As seen in the novel, Victoria Dawson as the main character, she
experienced mental bullying from her parents and people around her because of
different physical appearance from her family. Impacts of Mental Bullying that
are experienced by Victoria Dawso; she feels anxiety and low self esteem because
her parents always bully her, so she decides to go to New York to Search for self
identity and go to gym to lose her weight to fulfill her dream, raises her self
esteem and wants to look thin and reflected with her family.
The conclusion of this research is there are four kinds of mental bullying
toward Victoria in the novel “Big Girl” by Danielle Steel. They are isolation,
humiliation, embarrassed, and condescended. Then, there are two impacts of
mental bullying, they are feeling anxiety and low self esteem.
