Illocutionary and Perlocutionary Acts in “Midnight in Paris Movie”
This is a study about the illocutionary and perlocutionary acts in “Midnight in Paris Movie”. The objectives of this research are (1) to know the types of illocutionary acts are expressed by the main character in “Midnight in Paris Movie”, (2) to describe the perlocutionary acts of the other characters toward the main character’s illocutionary acts in “Midnight in Paris Movie” by using speech act theory. The descriptive qualitative research is used on this research where the source of data is taken from “Midnight in Paris” movie, and it is directed by Woody Allen in 2011, consisted of 245 utterances. The data which is contained the main character (illocutionary) and other characters’ (perlocutionary) utterances were taken by employing note-taking and then were analyzed through Searle’s theory on illocutionary and perlocutionary acts. From the result of the research, it is found fourty four illocutionary acts of the main character and fourty four perlocutionary acts of the other characters toward the main character’s illocutionary acts occured in the movie. Based on the findings, the writer concluded that illocutionary acts in the movie “Midnight in Paris” can be seen by five types of illocutionary acts according to Searle’s theory, they are assertive, directive, commissive, declarative and expressive where asserting is mostly used by the main character. Then, it also found perlocutionary acts by other characters, they are utterance and action.
