EDWARD DANIELS DELUSION IN THE MARTIN SCORSESE’S MOVIE “SHUTTER ISLAND”
This thesis studied about Edward Daniels‟ Delusion in the Movie “Shutter
Island” by Martin Scorsese. The aims of this thesis are to describe the types of
delusional disorder on the major character in the Scorsese‟s movie “Shutter Island”
and the treatments are used to cure major character‟s delusion in the movie.
The writer used descriptive qualitative method and psychological approach in
describe the types of delusional disorder faced by major character in the movie and
the treatment to cure it. In this research, the instrument used by the writer was note
taking. From this instrument, the writer watched the movie and read the script of the
movie and identified the data, then wrote down the data into six colored card and last
classified the data based on the theory.
In this research, the writer found that the movie “Shutter Island” by Martin
Scorsese showed the types of delusional disorder experienced by major characters,
they are grandiose types, jealous types, persecutory types, and somatic types. Edward
Daniels is more dominant in grandiose types than the jealous, persecutory, and
somatic types. The writer also found the treatment to cure delusional disorder of
major character depicted in the movie, they are individual therapy, and anti psychotic
drugs. Daniels treated by all of those treatments through the exploring his faulty mind
and together with his psychiatrist presenting some factual information about him.
However, the disorder needs to be treated before it becomes chronic.
Hopefully, this thesis can contribute to education as an analysis of literary work,
especially for students of English and Literature Department.
