AN ANALYSIS OF IDIOMATIC EXPRESSION IN DEATH ON THE NILE MOVIE

Language is the subject of all communication; we cannot communicate
without language. Every language has an idiom, and it is hard to learn and capture
the intent of the idiom if we are not part of the native speaker's language. Not
everyone understands the idioms, making them essential to learn. As described
earlier that idioms are unique texts that cannot interpret directly. This research
study focuses on the idiomatic expression that appears in Death on the Nile movie
adaptation from Agatha Christie through McCarthy and O’Dell’s theory.
The research objective for this study is to identify the types of idiomatic
expressions used in the Death on the Nile movie and to describe how idiomatic
expression is used in the Death on the Nile movie. This research study applied a
qualitative method to describe the types and use of idiomatic expressions in the
movie. The data of this research is a movie with English subtitles, consisting of
idiomatic expressions and all suspected as idiomatic expressions. At the same
time, the data source of this study is the Death on the Nile movie. The researcher
used note-taking to obtain the required data from Death on the Nile movie.
The result shows forty data of idiomatic expressions found in the movie
based on the theory of McCarthy and O’Dell about six types of idioms: similies,
binomials, proverbs, cliché, fixed statements, and other languages. The conclusion
is only binomials, proverbs, cliché, and fixed statements found in the movie.
This research aims to simplify and add insight into the idiomatic
expressions found in the Death on the Nile movie. The researcher expects that
readers can easily find the meaning of the idioms used in the Death on the Nile
movie after reading this research. In addition, the researcher expects this research
will help English literature majors, especially in the field of Linguistics.
