‘ANXIETY AS SEEN IN NICOLA YOON’S ‘EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING’
This study discusses the problem of anxiety felt by the characters in the
novel Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. This study aims to identify Pauline
and Madeline forms of anxiety and the defense mechanisms they applied. This
study used the descriptive qualitative method. In this research, the writer becomes
the instrument because the writer has the main role in collecting data. When
collecting data, the researcher focused on stories and dialogues related to the
problem. Data were analyzed using the psychoanalysis theory of Sigmund Freud.
The findings show that there are sixteen types of anxiety described in the novel:
eight data reality anxiety, four data neurotic anxiety, and four data moral anxiety.
The findings of this study indicate that the main source of Pauline's anxiety is her
unrecovered past trauma. Meanwhile, Madeline experiences anxiety caused by the
stimulus she faces. The researcher concluded that Pauline and Madeline managed
their anxiety by using different defense mechanisms. Pauline uses defense
mechanisms, namely Denial, projection, and suppression. Madeline uses defense
mechanisms: Denial, rationalization, and sublimation.
