CODE-SWITCHING OF ENGLISH AND INDONESIAN IN SPEAKING CLASS AT ENGLISH AND LITERATURE DEPARTMENT OF UIN ALAUDDIN MAKASSAR
This research discussed the use of code-switching by a lecturer in a speaking
skill class at English and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. The
purpose of this research was to identify types of code-switchingِusingِHoffman’sِ
Theory and functions of code-switchingِusingِAppleِandِMuysken’sِtheoryِusedِ
by a lecturer in a speaking skill class. This research used qualitative methods and
observation as a technique for collecting the data. Descriptive approach to analyze
data to know the functions of code-switching and the types of code-switching. The
finding showed that there are three types of code-switching occurring in the
classroom they are tag-switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential
switching. It is shown that the most dominant type of code-switching used by the
lecturer in class AG 3 and AG 4 is intra-sentential switching. The finding showed
that there are five functions of code-witching occurred in the classroom they are
referential function, expressive function, phatic function, metalinguistic function
and directive function. This showed that the most dominant function of code-
switching is directive function. The researcher recommends this issue for the next
researcher who is interested in code-switching in the classroom to develop our
knowledge about the use of code-switching in the classroom. For lecturers, this
issue can be a consideration to improve their performance in the classroom during
learning and teaching process in the classroom.
