THE NOSTALGIC CHARACTER IN DAVID WALLIAMS’S THE BOY IN THE DRESS
Childhood as a time is so fun and bursting of memories for most people.
This period is often used as a reference for nostalgia. The Boy in the Dress by David
Walliams narrate Dennis life with the past memory of his mother. This research
discusses nostalgic character in the Boy in the Dress which aimed to find out the
nostalgia of the main character and the nostalgia affect of the projection of character
Dennis as the main character. This research used Svetlana Boym’s theory of
Nostalgia and Edgard V. Roberts’s theory of Character with descriptive qualitative
method and note-taking as an instrument. This research was conducted in order to
provide the knowledge of the readers in uncovering the nostalgia displayed of the
boy, twelve-year-old. The researcher concludes that kind of nostalgia as stated by
Svetlana Boym felt by Dennis was included in the category of reflective and
restorative nostalgia by looking at the character of Dennis himself, from what the
other characters say about Dennis's character and from what the author tells in the
story in his novel based on Edgard V. Roberts's character theory and the nostalgia
experienced by Dennis was able to project Dennis' character, such as maudlin and
feminine.
